Switch from Apple Keychain to Lockbox

This takes about 30 seconds. Your passwords are encrypted from the moment they enter Lockbox.

cross-platform
Apple Keychain only works on Apple devices. Lockbox works everywhere.

Part 1: Export from Apple Keychain

1

Open Apple Keychain on your computer

You need a Mac to export. iPhone cannot export passwords directly.

2

Go to File > Export

On your Mac: System Settings > Passwords > three dots menu > Export All Passwords.

System Settings > Passwords > Export
3

Choose CSV format

Select "CSV" as the export format. Enter your Apple Keychain master password to confirm.

4

Save the file

Save it somewhere you can find it. Desktop is fine. You'll delete this file after import.

Important: The exported CSV contains your passwords in plain text. Import it into Lockbox immediately and delete the file afterwards.

Part 2: Import into Lockbox

5

Open Lockbox

If you don't have it yet, download Lockbox for iOS, Android, or Chrome.

6

Go to Settings > Import

Tap the Settings tab, then tap "Import passwords (CSV)" and choose the file you just exported. Lockbox detects which app it came from automatically.

Settings > Import passwords (CSV)
7

Pick your CSV file

Select the CSV you exported from Apple Keychain. Lockbox automatically detects the format and maps the columns.

8

Import and check the result

Lockbox imports the file and then tells you how many passwords were added and how many duplicates it skipped. If anything could not be imported it says so, and how many.

Verification

After import, Lockbox tells you what it did: "12 passwords imported." It only mentions duplicates when it actually skipped some, so a clean import says nothing about them. If any were left out because your free vault is full, it says that too, and tells you to keep your file.

Open your vault and scroll through. Verify your important accounts are there: email, bank, social media.

If everything looks right, delete the CSV file from your computer.

Part 3: Optional cleanup

Only do this after you have verified all your passwords are in Lockbox.

1.Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
2.Go to Passwords > Password Options
3.Leave "AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys" switched on. Lockbox does not offer iPhone autofill yet, so turning Apple's off would leave you with none at all. On iPhone you copy from Lockbox for now; in Chrome on your computer, the Lockbox extension fills for you.
4.Apple Keychain is free and built into iOS. There is nothing to cancel or uninstall.

Your existing Keychain entries will remain on your Apple devices but will no longer autofill. You can delete individual entries from Settings > Passwords if desired.
